IAA Membership
SANAVA is a member of the International Association of Art (IAA) / Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques (AIAP).
The South African Association of Arts – our name in 1945 – was a founding member of the International Association of Art – Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques in French. This is a non-governmental world body run by and for visual artists in every medium, style and tradition. It was founded in 1954 under the auspices of UNESCO.
Artists from countries across the world are represented by their national committees. At the first General Assembly of the association in Venice in 1954, we were represented by an established visual artist, Walter Battiss. He was elected as a member of the organisation’s first executive committee, together with representatives from Brazil, the USA, Yugoslavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Japan and Sweden.
The association’s objectives are:
Letter concerning the UNESCO response to the Covid 19 crisis and the mechanisms created to help the artists. You will notice that this initiative, taken by the Directrice generale, Mrs Audrey Azoulay, corresponds to the World Art Day date, April 15 !! AIAP/IAA can be proud of the echo resulting from the vote of this International Day which now allows a global thought about the status of all the artists worldwide. UNESCO COVID 19 and CULTURE.pdf
